Q

Heidi from Augusta asks, "What is panic disorder and how can it be treated?"

A

Panic disorder is a condition that is affecting more and more of the population. Symptoms may include a sudden increase in hearth rate, overwhelming fear, shaking and shortness of breath. Some describe it as a feeling of things "closing in." This is called a panic attack. It is sometimes called an anxiety attack and it is a real sensation.

Generally, it is believed to result from stress, but there is more to it than that. First of all, when we are all in a stressful situation our breathing becomes very shallow. This causes a decrease in the amount of oxygen in your body, making us more susceptible to an attack. Another factor is your blood sugar drops too low as in hypoglycemia. Caffeine and nicotine have also been associated with panic disorder. Finally, constant stress causes the adrenal glands to work overtime. This affects the gland's ability to properly monitor the hormone it secretes. One of the major hormones is adrenaline. All of these factors are greatly influenced by the way you perceive a stressful situation.

A very good course of treatment is to learn to breathe properly. Sometimes placing a three by five card with the word BREATH in a visible place helps to break the shallow breathing habit by bringing it to your attention. Eat fewer refined sugars like candy and pastries and increase complex carbohydrates like rice and potatoes. This helps prevent low blood sugar. Limit your intake of caffeine. Take a supplement that is specifically designed to support your adrenal gland. Counseling is very useful in helping to understand the way you think and can teach you ways to relax.

As with most conditions, the more factors you address, the greater your chance of recovery. Again, it is always important to seek the advice of your healthcare provider. Thank you for your question Heidi.
