Sue from Windsor writes, "What effect does attitude have to do with one's health in terms of healing and fighting serious disease?" |

That is a very good question and it is often overlooked by many health care providers. The latest research shows a strong relationship between attitude and health. The more positive and happy the outlook on life, the better the body can deal with the illness. Have you ever noticed that when you are depressed or in an unresolved situation the desire to do any physical activity is gone? This is s simple example to show emotional distress is a major drain on your energy supply. Just as it depletes your energy to be physical, it also depletes your body's energy to heal and be well. Another simple example of health and attitude connection is when you see a person who complains all day long at work about how tired they are, then at four o'clock in the afternoon, just before they leave work, their energy level seems to go up considerably. It is because they have changed their attention to something they consider fun. There is a book by Bernie Segal, MD, entitled "Love, Medicine and Miracles," which is excellent reading. It is also available on audio cassette. Dr. Segal is a cancer specialist who has studied people who had complete remissions of the disease. His discoveries are very enlightening. One of the major themes in the book is the effect of a person's attitude on the healing. Although one's attitude will not cure everything, it is a vital part of the healing process.
