Q

Mike from Augusta asks, "What is DHEA and is it helpful? Are there any side effects?"

A

DHEA has become a very popular supplement over the past year or so. The popularity comes primarily from claims that DHEA has anti-aging properties. The claims include increased strength and vitality to name a few. The selling of DHEA has increased considerably due to aggressive marketing.

DHEA is actually the hormone Dehydroepiandrosterone (no wonder it’s abbreviated) which is produced primarily by the adrenal glands. The function of the natural hormone is little understood, however. There has been no long term research with humans regarding the supplement, and this should be a concern.

The old adage, "if you don’t use it, you loose it" applies very well to DHEA. The body has a build-in monitoring device to regulate blood levels of DHEA. If it is low, the adrenals secretes enough to bring it back up to appropriate levels. If the DHEA level is always high, the body no longer has to produce it. The adrenal gland then becomes "lazy" and the hormone output is diminished. This happens not only with DHEA, but with other hormones as well. How healthy and strong would we be if someone else exercise for us?

If you decide to use this product, do it under the supervision of a knowledgeable healthcare provider. Generally, it should not be used for longer then two weeks. A potential side effect may include depressed immunity (catching more colds, allergies, bronchitis). It is also prudent to keep a journal of your health while taking any new supplement. Initially you may feel better taking it, but as time passes new and other symptoms may arise as a result.

Thank you very much for your question Mike, I’m sure you were not alone on this one.
